Image result for metooIt seems like every day there is a new name (or names) of people accused of sexual misconduct within the workplace. Since the Harvey Weinstein case broke out in October 2017, there have been over 50 public figures that have either been fired or called out for sexual misconduct (check source here).  It's scary to think about but the facts are a harsh reality of the world we live in today. Sexual misconduct is taking place all around the world and it is not just high profile people that are standing up. 223 women, including 60 current and former ambassadors, recently signed an open letter #metoonotsec accusing their industry of discrimination and harassment (check out article here).

The #metoo hashtag (which I talked about in a previous blog post ), has been a helpful tool to open up dialogues and create waves within the workplace in terms of what is and what is not appropriate conduct. As the unfortunate list rises of victims sharing their stories, it is important to use this time as a period of contemplation when it comes to our interactions with our co-workers, peers, and individuals.

For many of the accusers, the first statement that they have generally made was a state of shock.
"This has been a shock and it's been extremely humbling," said Minnesota State Senator to the New York Times (article here). While friends of the accusers, such as Roy Moore, typically brush away accusations because of their values and personal attributes.

The reality is this: sexual misconduct happens. No scratch that, it IS happening. Sure, you might not be grabbing at someone inappropriately at the office, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be evaluating your behavior towards others. Reflect on your behaviors towards others. Question yourself and others. If you sense something, say something. Did you just see a cute boy and want to holler across the street? Think about how you would feel if you were in their shoes and continue to evaluate your daily interactions so that you aren't that person that is sitting in HR now, or in ten years, being questioned for their behavior. Because the sad reality is that it could be your brother, sister, best friend, leader, or boss. So until this behavior stops, I will continue to write and write about why this behavior and actions need to stop.

    Until next time,

    Sabrina Kennelly

With the cold weather creeping its way into Minnesota, my travel-obsessed mind has one thing on my mind: going somewhere warm. While I may not be going anywhere anytime soon, it is fun to pretend and go bathing suit shopping just in case the moment arises. Below, you will be able to see four of my favorite picks (which I might have to buy for myself) from Amazon.com. All of the suits are under $20 and seem to have good reviews of the product. Let me know what you think of the suits below and have fun shopping (even if you aren't planning on sunbathing anytime soon!).

For the past five years, I have been snapping pictures for fashion shows, promotional shoots, senior pictures, and a little of everything in between. Throughout the years I have learned that photography can be more than just a hobby; it has the potential to become a business.

You see, photography is more than just snapping pictures. Before the photoshoot even begins you have to come up with a concept. This means finding a location to shoot in (for example the Minnesota State Capital), looking up photography rules and open hours, and getting some inspiration from other photographers and works of arts. Right now, my models are shooting for free. This means that the majority of my work are non-paying shoots. I mostly get contacted via social media (Facebook and Instagram being the primary source to connect) of models interested in creating shoots with myself. Sometimes they will come in with concepts of their own, other times I will be focusing on an idea that I am interested in doing.
Photography is something that I love to market as one of my additional talents. You really have to be a people person in order to be a fashion photographer because you are interacting one-on-one with someone in an intimate setting. Shooting has allowed for me to create close friendships with individuals that I would have never dreamed of meeting. Having the opportunity not only to photograph them but have conversations about their work, has allowed for me to push myself further and further into the photography business. I'll admit, that I still have a lot to learn about photography, but I am finally seeing some of my hard work pay off.

I consider myself to be a unique photographer for many different reasons. First, I don't shoot in your typical locations. Why should we keep on regenerating the same content over and over again? I am always scouting for new models, places, and ideas that will make people stop their scrolling on Instagram and stare. I don't want to look like xyz's work, because of guess, what? I'm not them, so why would I even try to imitate their work. I pride myself off of my fast editing skills (which are completed 24-48 after the shoot) and love hearing people's reactions to the shoots.

It's kind of funny how much my photography has developed over the ages. I am thankful for the experiences that I have had to learn about the many aspects of photography and hope that maybe one day (fingers crossed) I can expand my photography into something a bit more lucrative. Until then, I'll keep on networking my butt off. To see more of my work please feel free to check out www.sabrinakennellyphotography.com

Ever have the desire to move away and teach in a different country? Being an assistant in France was a rewarding experience to utilize my newfound skills from college in a new and challenging environment. If you want to learn more about my experiences you can click on this link. There are many post-grad teaching programs to choose from. My time traveling for the moment may be over, but the memories and here to last. One of my favorite things that I did before moving to France with TAPIF was checking out video montages of people's adventures during their year abroad. Watching these videos not only motivated me to step out of my comfort zone and apply for the program, but helped create excitement in terms of how much traveling I could do.
As a photographer, I have always admired film. I'll admit that I have a lot to learn in terms of keeping the camera stable and getting authentic shots, but I hope that the video below can give you a glimpse of what my life was like abroad. You'll get to see some of the friends I made along the way, the places I frequented, and the memories that will be cherished forever.
Let me know what you think of the video and share your travel related videos in the link below!

Fun Fact: I consider myself to be a goal oriented person. One of my goals coming back to Minneapolis was to expand my photography and work with more clients. The other day (aka last Saturday), I decided to join a Facebook group for models and photographers.

For some odd reason I always get nervous showing my photography on social media. Don't get me wrong; I love attention, but I'm always scared that my photography wont be received well by others. Fast forward to this Sunday. I am in downtown St.Paul at the Union Depot (my dream location), and I have seven models dressed in all black and vintage coats. This, folks, is the beauty of networking. By going yet again out of my comfort zone I was finally able to shoot my vintage fur concept in my dream location. Below, are a few photos for preview (which you'll be able to see in full via my Instagram and Facebook page). Let me know what you think of the pictures below. I would have never imagined that I would be producing content like this, and I cannot wait to see where my freelance photography will take me.

For photographers and models alike, the winter can be considered a time where your creativity is tested to the max. Unless you are lucky enough to have a studio, many photographers resort to finding locations that will keep both the client and photographer warm during their photo shoot. Here are a couple of ideas of where to shoot this winter in the Twin Cities. Keep in mind, every location has different rules when it comes to photography. Before you start shooting at your desired venue, be sure to check out the dos-and-donts for photographers. Some locations will even have special photography hours so make sure you don't have any security guards getting mad at you during your perfect shot.

    #1) Minnesota State Capital

    Photo Taken by Joe Mamer
This is one of my personal favorites and I cannot wait to shoot here this winter. The capital is open to the public throughout the week from 8:30 am- 5pm and offers a variety of architecture and lighting for any photographer to get giddy about. The building was newly refurbished this past summer and contains paintings that will make any model look like royalty.  My personal favorite location of the building? The basement offers unique architecture and lighting that would create stellar black-and-white photographs.

    #2) Minnesota History Center
Image result for Minnesota History Center
Just walk down the street and you'll be able to find your next location in St.Paul. Though the museum itself has great sights the building itself is one to be marveled at as well. The center allows for a great backdrop of the capital along with natural lighting and pillars that would make for the perfect backdrop in any photo. This is a one-of-a-kind unique space like no other, and though it might cost you a few dollars to enter in, is definitely worth the investment.

    #3) Shopping Mall

    Related image

The Mall of America might be known as the largest mall in America, but it offers a unique space for photographers. If you are creative enough during your concept of shooting, this mall could be a photographers playground for potential shoots. Just think about it: the mall offers bright space, playful settings like Nickelodeon Universe, and even allows for models to change up their look at a drop of a hat with the over 50+ retailers. Shooting at the Mall of America will require prior notification from the PR team. You might not want to bring a client out here, but this is a great place to snap pictures from your phone for security purposes. Local Malls (including Rosedale or the Galleria) are a bit more lax on their photography rules and are great ideas for shooting.

    #4) Minneapolis Institue of Arts

Image result for minneapolis institute of arts photography
Where else should one get inspired than at an art gallery? If you aren't shooting for professional or commercial purposes and have signed a form, this oasis is a perfect place to shoot. Not only does it provide inspiration with its grand tableaus, but you also have the possibility to shoot in one of the grandest buildings in the Twin Cities. The museum is fairly large and requires no entry fee so make sure you have a plan of attack when shooting here or you just might become lost in a maze of perfection. My personal favorite area for taking pictures? Target Corporate has dedicated a wing. Not only does this area provide great lighting, it also has a modern and fresh feel compared to the rest of the building; allowing for a great contrast in your shots.

#5) The University of Minnesota (or any college campus)

Image result for university of minnesota
One of my little secrets when shooting is finding locations that no one would imagine shooting at. College campuses, as much as we hate sometimes going into them, offer unique and creative places for shooting photography while keeping you warm. Think of the University of Minnesota, one of the largest campuses in the United States, and how much its architecture varies from building to building. There are so many different directions that you can go shooting on campus that hasn't been used as promotional material. Current rates for non-students are $100 per hour with an addition $25 sign up fee.

    Honorable mentions

    - Favorite restaurant or bar (during off hours)
    -Movie Theaters
    - The Gutherie Theater
    - Event Centers (during off hours)
    -Skyways
-Como Park Conservatory (see website for photography hours).

I'll admit that I've always wanted to be behind the camera. So when I had the opportunity to have my photos taken with the latest Minneapolis photographer/ model meetup I couldn't resist having my photos taken. Don't get me wrong, I love snapping pictures of others, but sometimes I wonder what life would be like behind the scenes.

It was quite a humbling experience during the networking event when people questioned if I was a model or a photographer. The fashion age is shifting- and so am I. The concept of who can be a model is shifting- and maybe- just maybe I could someday be considered one too.

If you're interested in participating in the next Models/Photographers mixer I would highly recommend coming. Check out the link below to learn about more information and join in on the fun. https://www.facebook.com/events/123362718362397/
