With the beloved show Pretty Little Liars coming to an end, I thought it would be fit if I dedicated the next month to the beloved girls that help make the show how where it is today. The first person that I will be featuring is Shay Mitchell. There has always been something that I loved about Shay's personal style that makes me just a tad envious. Her combination of Cali and rocker chic is something that not many people can pull off. Here are just a few pictures of my favorite looks that she has done throughout the years.
Let me know if there is a subject that you are thinking about teaching in your class that you would like to see!
Back in 2002 my staple accessory was my choker necklace. It was black with colorful flowers and I never took it off. I literally mean NEVER. With my scrunchy in my hair and choker necklace I was pretty much a replica of Lizzie McGuire (minus the blonde hair of course). After several years my choker necklace broke. It was devastating. As every fashionista has probably felt in their lives, loosing a staple piece in their wardrobe can be dramatic to say the least.
Ten years later the choker trend has somehow manifested its way back onto the shelves at Claires. For months I debated about the idea of buying a choker and going back to my old staple piece. As a 22 year old (young I know) I questioned if it was suitable for someone my age to buy, let alone wear, a statement piece such as a choker in public. Well ladies and gentlemen the time has come....because I have decided to buy a choker necklace (suitably at Claire's once again).
As I put on the necklace (which funny enough looks almost exactly like the same one I wore when I was 8 years old) feels like reuniting with an old friend. In a weird way I feel confident with the necklace. Though I probably look like a 15 year old girl putting it on with my hair parted in a small bun on the top of my head, I couldn't be happier.
At the end of the day my lesson is this: do what makes you happy. If that means looking like your 12 year old self again why the heck not. And hey, at was only $3.

I close my eyes. It's 8 am and I am on Rue d'Alesia in the 14th arrondissement on a sunny spring afternoon. Just like in the movie J'aime Paris, I find myself strolling down the hidden passage ways of Paris, covered in greenery and lilacs. The birds chirp and the quiet residential neighborhood begins to come to life as the window shutters open up with the sound of jazz music playing in the apartment above.
8:30 am
My stomach grumbles, so I turn back onto Rue d'Alesia and hop onto the metro. I am on the platform waiting for line 13. I hear the sound of a woman come onto the intercom announcing that the train will be arriving in two minutes. People push back forward in anticipation as the green and white train jitters to a halt. It's 8:30 am so the metro is packed full of people. I squeeze my way through the metro and make sure to say 'pardon' to each person I on accident brush against. There is a man in the right hand corner playing the violin. He is singing in Italian. I become dazed by his music until I realize that I am at my metro stop. I swarm pass the lady who has her music on too loud and the couple that is furiously making out next to the doors and step off onto the platform. It's 8:40am and I find myself in an airport like structure. There are people walking in every direction, with their briefcases in hand, on the moving walkways. I am in the underground maze known as Montparnasse Bienvenue. I see a couple struggling to find the way out of the metro system and up onto the train station and give directions.
9 am
25 minutes later, I head into the fresh air. It's 9 am and I find myself in the luxurious Saint Germain Des Pres at my favorite restaurant: Laduree. The waiter sits me down next to a window and after a few minutes my hot chocolate and pastries arrive. I feel like a princess surrounded by all the delicacies around me. I look at the older woman across the restaurant from me who is also sitting by herself, covered in fur and this year's latest Chanel, patting her dog with one hand while sipping her cappuccino with the other.
10 am.
I decide to grab some macaroons and head over to the Louvre. As I walk across Les Pont des Arts I can see to my right the Eiffel Tower in the far distance. I sigh in disbelief that I am in Paris for 24 hours. Couples on both sides of the bridge are holding their selfie sticks trying to get the perfect selfie with the infamous love-lock-bridge. I make my way past the Tuileries gardens and find myself inside the Louvre. Tourists look in every direction for signs pointing towards the Mona Lisa while I veer off to the Ancient Greek section. There's something about the statues and the grandeur of the pillars that fascinates me about this room. From the painted blue ceiling of the planets to the tiny gems that are encased in glass, I can't help but stare in awe. I continue to walk around the museum and stare at the giant paintings that are bigger than my apartment in disbelief.
45 minutes, and several metro transfers later, I find myself sitting in my favorite Asian restaurant, Le Sesame, next to the Canal- Saint Martin. The clock turns 1 pm as I finish slurping the noodles out of my vegetarian styled pho and head over into Belleville. This area is known to be one of the 'China towns' of Paris. Filled with colorful murals and street art throughout the area, I grab some bubble tea and walk up Rue de Belleville.
2:30 pm
It's the grandest park I have ever been to in my life. The Park of Buttes Chaumont is filled with people playing with their dogs, having picnics, and laying to catch a tan. I walk into the center of the park and sit facing a fortress-like building. Bikes speed past on the road next to me and the aroma of nutella and crepes can be smelled in the air from the little cafe behind me. I sit for hours, reading a book and letting the world around me come to a still.
6pm
I find myself back by the Canal Saint Martin at my favorite bar,le Comptoir Generale ,with a couple of friends. It feels like a tropical paradise here and I order a fruity drink and sit at the terrace next to a pirate boat shaped bar . After a couple of drinks with my friends I decide to go towards Montmartre for dinner at La Petaudiere .
8pm
Nestled away in the windy streets by Sacre Coeur, this restaurant allows for you to receive the typical French dinner while listening to some of the best piano music you could ever imagine hearing in your life. As I finished up my ice cream while listening to la vie en rose, I decided to venture out into the streets of Paris at night and take in the 24 hour day I had in the city of lights.

The holidays are right around the corner and that means its time for people to gather around with their friends and family and party. As an American living in France, I found myself somehow becoming very excited for Thanksgiving. Mind you Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, but something about this year has me so excited. My guests are probably trembling at the thought that someone like me is cooking dinner for Thanksgiving. And you know what? They probably should be! This is the first major holiday that I am hosting by myself (and in a foreign country to add on top of that). I have no idea if the grocery stores will have the ingredients I need to make my favorite dishes. I have no idea if what I cook will turn out right. Someone though I feel a bit at ease about Thanksgiving and I become more and more excited for Thursday night and Friday to arrive (we're celebrating it a day late).
I blame the fact that I think I'm capable of cooking partially because of this blog. Somehow I have gained the confidence in inviting a dozen people and cook for them. All I can do for now is wait, check Pinterest, and channel my inner Martha Stewart and pray that this Thanksgiving goes well.
If you're curious on what type of dishes that I will be attempting to cook this thanksgiving check out some of the pictures below and let me know what you think!

Confession: I LOVE cleansers. So when I heard that bareMinerals, a brand that I will forever keep close to my heart, came out with the Clay Chameleon cleanser I just had to try it. This red clay mask consists of papaya, bamboo, and extracts of sea salts that will leave your face feeling light and refreshed. I personally love using this face wash the day after I have had a long night out with the girls. This cleanser not only will take off excess dirt off of your face but will leave your pores feeling rejuvenated. And don't worry guys, if you have sensitive skin (like moi) this product comes from natural ingredients meaning that there should be little to know breakouts on your lovely faces. So if you feel like you need a little spa-treatment throughout your week I would highly recommend buying this product for only $22.
Until next time,
Finding brunch in France can be a difficult task. Typically this on Saturday (and most especially) Sunday mornings in France, one does not dare go outside. Instead, the French cuddle up in their beds and recover for the week to come. Usually I'm all about this lifestyle. After all the French did invent the laissez-faire attitude that I have come to love. So when my friend (who is vegetarian and gluten free) asked to go out for brunch one weekend morning I immediately gave a puzzled look, because I had no idea where to go. Hence the creation of this blog post.
Thanks to Google, we found that in Montpellier Joy Yoga and Healthyfood was a great vegan and gluten free brunch option. So we grabbed our iphones and hungry selves over to downtown Montpellier to try what looked to be one of the best brunches in town, and it sure was. As a vegetarian, I find it hard to eat breakfast at restaurants in France. Typically sausages and a heap ton of bread are consumed here in la-France. This means that poor-old-me is stuck with bread that typically cost around 1 euro at the boulongerie and 4 or 5 at the restaurant. Pas cool.
To begin with, Joy Yoga and Healthyfood has an awesome set-up. This tropical like restaurant will instantaneously make you feel refreshed and relaxed. With its bamboo decor you can't help but feel as if you have entered into paradise. The brunch menu, which I'm still dreaming about to this day, is a combination of sweets (pancakes and breads), a salty dish (I choose a tofu dish), an acai bowl, and two beverages -one juice and one hot drink. The cost for brunch varies depending on how much you want to eat. The small brunch, for 15 euros, comes with a smaller variety of selections while the larger brunch for 25 euros comes with small samplers of sweets (and who doesn't love that?). After having eaten brunch at Joy Yoga and Healthyfood I couldn't help as I left the restaurant feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Naturally this means that I become addicted to the food and have re-visited the store for hipster-like pictures to explode on my Instagram. Here are just a few pictures of the dishes that I have enjoyed at the restaurant.
You can visit Joy Yoga and Healthyfood at: 55 Rue Estelle, 34000 Montpellier

Where do I begin with the infamous Chrissy Teigen? The model/ wife/ actress/ cook/ Bravo TV expert has a minimalist boho style that I (and many other envious people) could only dream of pulling off. From long cardigans, glamorous red carpet looks, to wearing simply jeans and a t-shirt, Teigen seems to be able to pull off anything she wears simply by showing off her confidence and what seems like a stellar personality (and who doesn't love that?!?). Here are just a few pictures of my favorite looks from Chrissy Teigen throughout the ages.
As someone who has already studied abroad, coming back to
France for the second time around was pretty much a breeze. I already knew the language,
customs, and all the other in-betweens for living in a foreign country. Until
this week, I thought I had it in the bag; that was until the elections
happened. As Tuesday approached I became more anxious about the possibility of
Donald Trump being elected. My French colleagues, friends, and even random
strangers would ask if I truly believed that we, the American people, would
elect someone like Trump into office. I laughed the notion off, telling them
that I had faith in the American people.
By Tuesday night my faith in the American people diminished
as I saw state after state shine in red. The country that I had grown up and loved
was morphing into a country full of hate. Miles away from home, all I could do
was watch and cry in horror as the possibility of Trump becoming President grew
stronger. How could the American people choose someone that is a sexist,
a racist, ableist, and xenophobic candidate as President of the United States? (If
you don’t believe me check the credible links attached). As I went to bed at
one in the morning, I prayed that I would wake up to see the America that I had
loved on the television screen displaying that love always conquered hate.
Three hours later, and lots of tossing and turning in my
bed, I woke up to my worst nightmare. Trump was in the low 200’s for electoral
votes and was predicted to win. As Hillary’s team announced for supporters to
go home, and Trump announced his victory all I could do was cry. I wept for my
friends of color who feared for their lives (even more then they had before). I
wept for my friends of the LGBTQ community who suddenly feared that their civil
freedoms would be taken away. I wept for the grandmas and mothers who would
have to explain to their children and grandchildren that America had elected a rapist and pussy-grabber instead of the first female president. I wept, because
for the first time ever I questioned if I would feel safe returning back to my country.
Throughout the week I have internally debated and (slowly)
come to terms with the elections results. I want to make myself clear about
certain matters. I am not sad or mad because a Republican won the election.
Rather, I am disappointed in the United States for electing someone who clearly
should not be President. Having these emotions of grief does not make me lesser
of a person. It makes me human.
I feel divided; one part wanting to flee as far away from
the US as possible while another part of me wants to fight. I feel tired because
in one term of being President, I worry that Trump will have erased hard work done
by numerous civil rights leaders. I feel hopeless and wonder if there will be a
future for my generation to have because the elected President doesn’t even believe in global climate change. I feel
scared because hate groups such as the KKK have once again become public thanks to
Trump’s hate speech.
So please forgive me if I decide to lie and say that I’m
from Canada for a bit. Understand that it’s hard for me to explain to my students about
the elections and be an ambassador for the United States abroad at the moment. All I can do is wait to see what this unpredictable president-elect will do to the United States and abroad. Until then, I will continue to stand in solidarity, all the way in France, with those who believe that
love can trump hate (pun 100% intended).
Until next time,
In my last blog post, I mentioned the difficulties of trying to cook for myself here in France. Just as promised I am showing two of my favorite dishes that I have perfected so far here in France as a single lady. As some of you may know, I have been a vegetarian for some time now. This means that sometimes its a bit difficult (especially being on a budget) to find food that is healthy yet savory for myself. Naturally, much of what I've been eating is eggs and vegetables. But when I go crazy of the same dish I have now perfected the art of making veggie burgers as well as pancakes. Though these two dishes aren't hard to make (they mostly require simply putting on the stove and calling it a day) it has been an adjustment for me to fend for myself and to create, as I would like to call them, 'masterpieces'. I decided to use some of the dishes that I miss most from back home in St. Paul, Minnesota and re-create them right here in France! Check out the pictures of both of the dishes below and let me know what you think!
Dish #1 is a veggie burger with Camembert cheese, olives, grilled peppers, and mashed potatoes. |
These pancakes are made without eggs and butter. I created an apple syrup with cheese and cinnamon and some apple juice to create a perfect fall treat. |
